Stained glass  course

This intensive one-day course takes place in my studio in Gloucester and will introduce you to the ancient craft of stained glass. You will choose a design to make from a selection that are all achievable in a day. The slideshow on this page will give you some ideas of what others have made.

My studio can accommodate up a maximum of two students for the stained glass day.  The day will include tuition and all the materials needed to make a simple panel approx 25cm square or  a rectangle 21cm x 29cm.

By the end of the day you will have a beautiful panel to take home.

We will start at 9:30am with a cuppa and an introduction to the day.

I will teach you how to cut glass, practicing on clear glass, before choosing a design from the patterns available and glass from my stock of colours and textures.

During the morning you will cut the pieces of glass to fit the design and start learning how to use lead to join the pieces together.

About 1pm we'll stop for a delicious home-made lunch provided by my husband John and served in the house.

After lunch you will continue to lead the glass together and solder the joints.

When you have finished 'leading up', around mid-afternoon, you will use cement to fix the glass to the lead to make it strong and water-tight. This can be quite time consuming and messy but many people find it relaxing and it all cleans up beautifully in the end. A final quick polish and your panel is ready to take home.

Your day will  finish about 5 - 6pm. As well as lunch there will be refreshment breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

Please be prepared to stand for long periods of time though the studio does have an area for one person to sit down. Pregnant women and nursing mothers cannot work with lead so unfortunately this course is not suitable for them and they can try the glass fusing course instead.

Price options:

  • One to one tuition - you will have exclusive use of the studio and my tuition time - £200

  • £150 where you share the studio and my tuition time with another person. There is a  10% discount for a couple or two friends booking together for the same day.

It is recommended that you

  • bring reading glasses if you need them for close work

  • wear old clothes and comfortable closed toed shoes

For bigger projects including painting on glass see my glass painting course.

I am also happy to discuss a bespoke course to help you with a specific project.
